Since 1989 the Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) Archaeology Program has worked with state lands managers and other agency personnel to manage archaeological and historic sites on lands purchased or proposed for purchase through the CARL and later conservation lands programs. Cultural resource assessments and inventories are the primary management tool employed by CARL Archaeology Program staff, and projects are currently being conducted in various areas of the state. CARL staff also provides technical assistance and training, and works closely with Permitting, Training, and Research.
This guide outlines the history and goals of the program, summarizes staff responsibilities, outlines the procedures to be followed, and clarifies the program's relationships with other Division of Historical Resources staff.
