What is it?
Recognizing more than 12,000 years of prehistory in Florida and an extremely
diverse historical past, Florida Archaeology Month is held annually to
let people know how important archaeology is in understanding our past.
Archaeology Month brings together people of all ages to learn more about
archaeological resources of our state, and how archaeology can enrich our
lives and those of generations to come through preservation and stewardship.

to see the state resolution or our archive
of previous Archaeology Month/Week events.
The fifth annual Florida Archaeology Month is planned by the Florida
Anthropological Society with its various chapters and members throughout
the state, along with the Florida Archaeological Council and private, state,
and federal agencies to reach the broadest audience possible.
Programs during Florida Archaeology Month will include public and classroom
lectures, site tours, educational materials, library displays, and special
events throughout the state. Florida Archaeology Month will be promoted
through a media campaign, along with the distribution of posters, brochures,
bookmarks, videos, and teaching packets.
Plan Now for Florida Archaeology
Month 1998
The Fifth Annual Florida Archaeology Month will be held from March 1 to
31, 1998, (because one week for scheduling events is not always convenient
for many organizations - we've changed WEEK to MONTH, giving you more dates
to choose from when planning activities).
Florida Archaeology Month is an annual statewide event held to encourage
Florida citizens and visitors to learn more about the archaeology and history
of our state and to preserve these important parts of Florida's rich cultural
heritage. This statewide observance is sponsored by the Division of Historical
Resources, Florida Department of State, Secretary of State,
the Florida Anthropological Society, the Florida Archaeological Council,
Florida State Parks, National Park Service, and the US Forest Service.
As a public place, We invite you to join us in promoting public awareness
and education by organizing a Florida Archaeology Month activity. Activities
might include a special exhibit, living history demonstrations, lecture-series,
special guided tours, a display of books on Florida history or prehistory,
or a film series. An event that helps visitors learn about and participate
in the archaeology and history of Florida will encourage and support the
protection of these non-renewable resources.
For more information on Florida Archaeology Month, please contact your
local Florida Anthropological Society Chapter Representative,See
list below.
Please join us in promoting Florida history and archaeology, Archaeology
Month is for Everyone.
