WHEREAS, during the past 12,000 years, people of many cultures have made
Florida their home; and
WHEREAS, the archaeological sites representing Florida's Native American
and early Old World people constitute a unique and irreplaceable resource;
and
WHEREAS, such archaeological remains represent the only records of human history
in Florida before European contact; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the State of Florida to protect and preserve
archaeological sites in our rapidly growing state; and
WHEREAS, archaeological sites contribute to the quality of life, recreation,
and understanding of human history for Floridians and visitors alike; and
WHEREAS, public appreciation and understanding is the foundation of
archaeological conservation; and
WHEREAS, the Florida Anthropological Society, the Florida Archaeological
Council, the Florida Division of Historical Resources, the National
Park Service, the National Forests in Florida, and the Florida
State Parks organize over one hundred events annually in Florida
to increase public awareness and understanding of archaeology.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Governor and Cabinet
of the State of Florida do hereby proclaim March, 2004 as
