On March 4, 1996, the Emanuel Point Ship was nationally recognized by being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Having been nominated by the Florida State Historic Preservation Officer, the site met National Register standards in that it is associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history; in that it embodies the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction; and in that it has yielded information important in our history.Emanuel Point Image

Emanuel Point Image Mechanical cleaning of the Emanuel Point breast plate continues under the direction of John Bratten, who is using an air abrasive tool to remove the delicate encrustations from the front and back of the armor plate. The process is tedious and time-consuming, and will eventually involve partial reconstruction of portions of the metal that have totally deteriorated.
On October 10, 1996, a major exhibit featuring the Emanuel Point Ship opened at the J. Earle Bowden Building in the Pensacola Historic District. Jointly sponsored by Historic Pensacola, Inc., and the Fiesta of Five Flags Association, Inc., the exhibit traces the heritage of Pensacola through its five cultural periods. The centerpiece of the new attraction is a full-scale replica of the stern section of the shipwreck site in a diorama setting that includes many of the original artifacts. Emanuel Point Image
Emanuel Point Image A second campaign of excavation at the Emanuel Point Ship began in April, 1997. These excavations focused on the galley area of the ship, forward of the mainmast step. Project staff included Dr. Roger C. Smith, project director; John Bratten, conservation lab director; Joe "Coz" Cozzi, field director; Capt. Keith Plaskett, logistical supervisor; and David Pugh, field technician, who was assisted by graduate student interns and local volunteers.
