Built in 1862 during the Civil War, West Martello Tower, like other fortifications of Key West, never was involved in a battle. However, it was used periodically for target practice by the U.S. Navy. Today, West Martello Tower is a national historic site which is home to the Joe Allen Garden Center and Key West Garden Club. It houses a rare collection of native and exotic trees and plants, including blooming orchids. The tranquil site overlooks the sea, and features an annual garden show. West Martello is open Tuesdays through Saturdays in season from 9:30 p.m. until 3:15 p.m.; admission is free.
