Surgeon's Amputation Kit @ Florida OCHP

Surgeon's amputation kit
This kit originally was owned by Dr. Thomas P. Gary of Brooksville and Ocala, who served as a surgeon in the 7th Florida Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. Gary may have purchased the kit, made by the Snowden Company of Philadelphia, while studying medicine in that city before the war. The ivory handles of these instruments indicate that they probably were designed for civilian use. Surgeon's kits from the Civil War period were usually elaborate sets of instruments fitted in fine fabric-lined wood cases. Each instrument served a specific function in an amputation.
