The Seminole Series
Join us for free public lectures about Seminole history and culture. Lectures in February and April are highlights of the Museum’s monthly 3rd Thursday event, which is held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Museum Theater, R. A. Gray Building

• February 21, 2008, 3rd Thursdays at the Museum
  "Seminoles in Transition" by Patsy West, Seminole scholar and ethnohistorian
  Ms. West will review the changing economic fortunes of Seminoles in the past 100 years and the Tribe’s successful efforts to maintain a unique cultural identity.
• April 17, 2008, 3rd Thursdays at the Museum
  "Art of the Florida Seminoles" by Dorothy Downs, curatorial consultant, Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami
  Ms. Downs will focus on the traditional arts, such as patchwork, that characterize Seminole culture, many of which are exemplified in Seminole People of Florida: Survival and Success.

The lectures in February and April are funded by the Florida Humanities Council, a state program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Children's Day

• January 26, 11:00am - 4:00pm
  Annual family event with entertainment, demonstrations, and Seminole- themed crafts for kids of all ages

2nd Saturday
Craft and story hour for kids up to 10 years of age - 11:00 a.m. - Museum lobby

• January 12
  Legends of the Seminoles
  Participants will hear legends, talk about their meaning, and create their own legend.
• February 9
  Beads on a String
  After learning about past and present Seminole adornment, such as beadwork, participants will make bead necklaces and gorgets.
• March 8
  Songs and Steps
  Participants will hear Seminole songs, learn about traditional dances, and make a musical instrument.
• April 12
  Check Out Chickees
  Participants will learn about Seminole chickees, a unique architectural structure, and make a miniature example.
• May 10
  Seminole Language and Learning
  Native schools and language will be the focus as participants do crafts that reinforce these aspects of Seminole culture.

Outreach Programs
The Museum of Florida History offers an in-class, Seminole-themed program for schools in Leon County. A trained educator presents hands-on activities that encourage critical thinking and cooperative learning while providing historical content.
