Sunshine State Standards Correlations

Numerous social studies, language arts, and arts standards for grades 6-8 and 9-12 can be met when teachers involve their students in the Florida History Fair. Some of the standards listed below are satisfied by participation in a specific entry category.

Because this year's theme, "Conflict and Compromise in History," is quite broad and versatile, topics relating to all time periods and geographic regions are conceivable. Thus, only a sample of the standards that address this year's theme have been cited below.

Middle School Correlations

Social Studies

SS.A.1.3.1 Understands how patterns, chronology, sequencing (including cause and effect), and the identification of historical periods are affected by frames of reference

SS.A.1.3.2 Knows the relative value of primary and secondary sources and uses this information to draw conclusions from historical sources such as data in charts, tables, graphs.

SS.A.1.3.3 Knows how to impose temporal structure on historical narratives.

Language Arts

LA.A.1.3.4 Uses strategies to clarify meaning, such as rereading, note taking, summarizing, outlining, and writing a grade-level-appropriate report.

LA.A.2.3.1 Determines the main idea or essential message in a text and identifies relevant details and facts and patterns of organization.

LA.A.2.3.2 Identifies the author's purpose and/or point of view in a variety of texts and uses the information to construct meaning.

LA.A.2.3.3 Recognizes logical, ethical, and emotional appeals in text.

LA.A.2.3.5 Locates, organizes, and interprets written information for a variety of purposes, including classroom research, collaborative decision making, and performing a school or real-world task.

LA.A.2.3.6 Uses a variety of reference materials, including indexes, magazines, newspapers, and journals, and tools, including card catalogs and computer catalogs, to gather information for research topics.

LA.A.2.3.7 Synthesizes and separates collected information into useful components using a variety of techniques, such as source cards, note cards, spreadsheets, and outlines.

LA.A.2.3.8 Checks the validity and accuracy of information obtained from research, in such ways as differentiating fact and opinion, identifying strong versus weak arguments, and recognizing that personal values influence the conclusions an author draws.

Arts

VA.B.1.3.1 Knows how different subjects, themes, and symbols (through context, value, and aesthetics) convey intended meanings for ideas in works of art.

VA.E.1.3.1 Understands how knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained from the visual arts can enhance and deepen understanding of life.

TH.A.1.3.1 Develops characters, relationships, and environments from written sources (e.g., plays, stories, poems, and history).

TH.A.3.3.1 Selects and creates elements of scenery, properties, lighting, costumes, make-up, and sound to signify a character and setting.

TH.A.3.3.2 Develops and uses technical sound effects such as microphones, synthesizers, tapes, and CDs to emphasize and enhance the meaning of a play.

TH.D.1.3.1 Understands a character in a play through exploration of internal characterization (e.g., emotions and motivations) and external characterization (e.g., background, posture, mannerisms, and dress).

TH.A.3.4.1 Uses scientific and technological advances to develop visual and aural staging elements that complement the interpretation of a text.

TH.A.3.4.3 Designs, implements, and integrates all sound effects into the production concept.

TH.B.1.4.1 Understands how actors, directors, and designers create and refine dialogue and state directions that convey the playwright's intent.

SS.A.3.3.4 Knows significant historical leaders who have influenced the course of events in Eastern and Western civilizations since the Renaissance.

SS.A.4.3.4 Understands how state and federal policy influenced various Native American tribes (e.g., the Cherokee and Choctaw removals, the loss of Native Americans homelands, the Black Hawk War, the removal polices of the Old Northwest).

SS.A.6.3.1 Understands how immigration and settlement patterns have shaped the history of Florida

SS.A.6.3.4 Understands how the interactions of societies and cultures have influenced Florida's history.

High School

SS.A.2.4.6 Understands features of the theological and cultural conflict between the Muslim world and Christendom and resulting religious, political, and economic competition in the Mediterranean region.

SS.A.3.4.1 Understands the significant political and economic transformations and significant cultural and scientific events in Europe during the Renaissance.

SS.A.3.4.10 Understands the political, military, and economic events since the 1950s that have had a significant impact on international relations.

SS.A.3.4.3 Understands the significant economic, political, and cultural interactions among the peoples of Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas during the Age of Discovery and the European expansion.

SS.A.3.4.7 Understands the significant political developments in Europe in the 19th century.

SS.A.4.4.1 Understands the economic, social, and political interactions between Native American tribes and European settlers during the Age of Discovery.
