300' x 35 Miles:
Corridor to the Past

Corridor to the Past

Prior to the construction of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County, a cooperative effort between the Florida Department of State and the Florida Department of Transportation led to some important archaeological discoveries just east of Tampa Bay.

Here, on property surveyed as the interstate right-of-way, Paleo as well as Archaic Indian dwelling sites were discovered and excavated.

Artifacts recovered from these sites illustrate the evolution of early Indian stone technology from about 12,000 until about 4,000 years ago. These discoveries illuminate prehistoric Indian life at

a time when profound changes in Florida's climate helped to cause the extinction of such animals as mammoths, mastodons, and sabertooth cats.

Composed of three freestanding units, the exhibit uses original artifacts, reproductions, and graphics to tell the story of early Indian hunters from the Hillsborough region.
