Florida Department of State Promotes 500 Year Celebration
Artifacts and 16th century re-enactors on display in Capitol rotunda
TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of State is promoting the 500 year anniversary of the discovery of Florida, coming up in 2013, by offering information about the historic event today in the State Capitol. A department display that includes artifacts and re-enactors will be in the Capitol Rotunda now through March 8, 2011.
The Department is hoping to draw awareness to the nationally significant event, when Ponce de Leon sailed along the east coast of Florida from Puerto Rico and gave the new land its name, La Florida, in April 1513. In addition to providing information about this historic occasion, department representatives will be offering tools to local communities wanting to participate in the Viva Florida! celebration which will take place throughout 2013 in Florida.
