Clarita Filgueiras has spent a lifetime practicing Spanish flamenco dance, beginning her studies at the age of eight. Born in Miami, Ms. Filgueiras comes from a long line of flamenco artists. From 1985 to 1989, Clarita lived in Madrid with her family, where she trained with Spain’s best artists. Ms. Filgueiras has since established herself as one of the top flamenco dancers in the United States. She studied bata de cola (“long train dress”) with Milagros Mengíbar, the master of the style, in Seville, Spain. Ms. Filgueiras has become a highly regarded practitioner of this unique art form, and is the only performer in Miami to dance in this style. Since 1997, she has directed her own Flamenco Puro Dance Company, which hosts master guest artists from Spain and offers workshops from renowned performers. She has created major works for other dance companies in addition to her own, and has self-produced and presented many of them in Miami to sold-out audiences. She has also performed with the Gypsy Kings and the Carlota Santana-Flamenco Vivo Dance Companybased in New York and Madrid. Clarita offers lectures and demonstrations on flamenco dance at public schools and libraries around Miami, helping to cultivate an appreciation for and understanding of this dynamic dance tradition.
